Post-Earthquake, Students In Jayapura Implement Online Learning

JAKARTA - The City Government (Pemkot) of Jayapura, Papua implemented online learning in all schools during the emergency response period following the 5.4 magnitude earthquake in the region.

Acting Mayor of Jayapura Frans Pekey in Jayapura said that currently, the local Education and Teaching Office together with the legal department are preparing a circular letter so that during the emergency response period the learning process is carried out online.

"This aims to anticipate unwanted things if there are aftershocks but also to provide assurance of comfort for students, teachers, and parents," said Pekey, as quoted from Antara, Sunday 12 February.

According to Pekey, services in each office are also limited as in the Jayapura City Government, but for other agencies it will be regulated by the respective leaders in that agency.

"This also includes every house of worship to adjust, if you feel uncomfortable, it should be carried out virtually, like during COVID-19," he said.

He explained that his party would continue to hold evaluation meetings to accelerate the handling of earthquakes in the area so that all affected communities could be served well.

He added that his party continues to appeal to all people in Jayapura City to always be vigilant because natural disasters can occur at any time.

"It is hoped that they can avoid multi-story buildings and always be vigilant if aftershocks occur," he said again.

The status of a disaster emergency response has been established by the City Government of Jayapura from 9 February to 1 March 2023.
