Lukas Enembe Appoints Attorney Who Ever Bribered Judges, KPK: That's the Right of a Suspect

JAKARTA - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) said the non-active Papua Governor Lukas Enembe as a suspect in alleged bribery and gratuities has the right to appoint anyone as a lawyer.

Including, asking a lawyer who had been a prisoner of a bribery case, Otto Cornelis Kaligis or OC Kaligis to be his defender.

"That is of course the suspect's right", said KPK Head of Reporting Section, Ali Fikri, to reporters at the KPK's Red and White Building, Kuningan Persada, South Jakarta, Friday, January 20.

Ali did not want to talk much about the appointment of OC Kaligis as Lukas' lawyer. He only hopes that the allegations of bribery and gratuities can run smoothly.

"Because the person concerned certainly understands how the criminal procedural law applies", he said.

Apart from that, the KPK wants Lukas to cooperate as a cooperative suspect. Moreover, the current legal process is by procedures.

"We hope that the suspect will also be cooperative while following all the processes that the KPK is currently carrying out", said Ali.

"KPK emphasizes that in the investigation of the case with the suspect LE and friends, all legal procedures must have been complied with", he continued.

OC Kaligis was appointed as one of the attorneys to accompany Lukas Enembe in handling the bribery and gratuity cases that ensnared him. The appointment was made directly by the family.

"The family appointed OC Kaligis as Pak Lukas' legal team", said one of Lukas' lawyers, Stefanus Roy Rening, to journalists, Friday, January 20.

Regarding OC Kaligis, the lawyer was once found guilty of bribing three judges at the Medan Administrative Court. The amount of money given reached 27 thousand US dollars and 5,000 Singapore dollars.

As a result of his actions, OC was jailed for 7 years in prison based on the decision of the Jakarta High Court. The sentencing was heavier than the Jakarta Corruption Court, which was 5.5 years.
