Issue Of Mayor/Regent Elimination In Jakarta, DPRD Reminds That Scientific Study Is Needed

JAKARTA - Secretary of Commission A DPRD DKI Jakarta Karyatin Subiyantoro reminded that the discourse on abolishing mayors and regents in Jakarta must be based on a comprehensive study and involve the DKI DPRD as a representation of the community.

According to Karyatin, this discourse must be included in a scientific study because the deletion will affect a number of rights. Starting from the right to budget, the rights of members of the council as representatives of the people to the right to services that have been received by the community so far.

"Of course, it has to be studied first as material for the government's consideration," said Karyatin as reported by ANTARA, Monday, November 28.

This policy change is related to centralized autonomy from regent-mayor autonomy, then fully directly to the province.

According to him, the positions of mayor and regent in Jakarta are very different from other regions that have their own authorization.

Then the positions of mayors and regents in Jakarta were filled by Echelon II-A Civil Servants (PNS) appointed by the Governor of DKI Jakarta. While in other areas elected by the people through local elections.

Karyatin gave the example of mayors and regents in West Java. Even though the position above them is the Governor of West Java, they do not necessarily comply with the policies of the governor.

"Why is that? Because they have authorization which is then directly elected by the people at the district and city levels. Meanwhile, mayors throughout DKI and regents of the Thousand Islands are subject to the governor," said Karyatin.

Karyatin believes that the positions of mayor and regent in Jakarta do not need to be abolished. Their role is very central in serving the community and representing governors at the city-regency level.

"In DKI it has been effective, because the mayor and regent are appointed directly by the governor. So there is no need to abolish their positions," he said.

Jakarta is rumored to not have the positions of mayor and regent after not being the National Capital City (IKN). Therefore, the management of government is fully handled directly by the governor.

This was conveyed by the Minister of National Development Planning (PPN)/Head of the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) Suharso Monoarfa after meeting with the Acting Governor of DKI Jakarta Heru Budi Hartono at the Jakarta City Hall on Thursday (24/11).

"So the government system going forward in Jakarta will remain as it is today, a province headed by a governor and then there will be no need for a regent or mayor," said Suharso.
