President Joe Biden Given Korean Name 'Bae Ji-sung', Expected To Continue To Maintain Peace Of The Korean Peninsula And The World

JAKARTA - United States President Joe Biden was given the honorific name in Korean, Bae Ji-sung, on Monday as part of a week-long commemoration to mark the end of the Korean War 69 years ago.

The award for the leader of the land of Uncle Sam was given by the South Korea - United States Friendship Association.

"We, the ROK-US Alliance Friendship Association, are honored to announce and give the Korean name to US President Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. His name is Bae Ji-sung," the association said in a statement released, citing the Korea Times July 26.

The name was passed on to Kurt Campbell, vice president and coordinator of the National Security Council for the Indo-Pacific.

The association further said President Biden's Korean surname comes from Pyeongtaek, a city located about 60 kilometers south of Seoul and home to the majority of 28.500 US troops in Korea.

His first name, Ji-sung, means region and star, respectively, the association added.

"The deeper and significant meaning behind naming "Bae Ji-sung" to US President Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. is, to continue to consider and maintain peace on the Korean Peninsula as he continues to contribute to world peace," the association said.

The handover of the Korean name to President Biden came as the allies marked the 69th anniversary of the end of the 1950-53 Korean War on Wednesday.

Events to commemorate the end of the war will include the inauguration of the Remembrance Wall, the newest addition to the Korean War Veterans Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, bearing the names of the more than 41.000 American and South Korean military personnel who died during the war.

President Biden is one of dozens of top US officials named Korean by the association. Previously, former US Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump were named Oh Han-ma and Woo Dae-il, respectively.
