JAKARTA - Bank Jakarta has started to build a communal biodigester facility based on organic waste in North Jakarta as part of efforts to process waste from sources. The two biodigester units to be built are targeted to be able to process up to 500 kilograms of organic waste per day and produce biogas and organic fertilizer.
The construction will be carried out at Rusunawa Rorotan, Cilincing, and TPS 3R Rawa Badak Utara Village. The initial phase was marked by the laying of the first stone (groundbreaking) at Rusunawa Rorotan on Monday, August 10.
Bank Jakarta President Director Agus H. Widodo said the construction of the biogas digester is part of Bank Jakarta's contribution in supporting the handling of organic waste in Jakarta. The biogas digester technology is considered to be able to convert organic waste into biogas as renewable energy and the residue is used as organic fertilizer.
"The construction of a biogas plant in Rorotan is a tangible contribution from Bank Jakarta to help address the challenges of waste management in Jakarta. The program is also included in the implementation of Bank Jakarta's Sustainable Finance Action Plan (RAKB) for 2026, which includes organic waste management, greenhouse gas emission reduction, and renewable energy utilization.
Technically, each biodigester unit is designed to have a processing capacity of 250 kilograms of organic waste per day. With two units operating, the total processing capacity is projected to reach 500 kilograms per day.
Based on technical studies, the facility is estimated to produce around 37.5 cubic meters of biogas per day. In addition, the operation of two biogas digesters is projected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by around 423 kilograms of CO2e per day or around 154.4 tons of CO2e per year.
Bank Jakarta Corporate Secretary Arie Rinaldi said waste management requires collaboration and sustainability of programs, especially in encouraging the processing of organic waste from its source.
"Through the construction of this biodigester, Bank Jakarta takes part in the management of organic waste from sources and encourages waste to provide added value for the community. Collaboration with the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is an important part so that waste management efforts can be carried out more integrated," said Arie.
According to Arie, the project in Rorotan is a continuation of a similar program that had previously been built in Pekayon Village, Pasar Rebo, East Jakarta, and was inaugurated in November 2025.

Now, we are expanding the use of biodigester technology derived from the processing of organic waste from sources through a collaboration program with the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government," explained Arie.
The development of biodigesters in North Jakarta is expected to strengthen the community-based organic waste management system while reducing the burden of waste that ends up in the final processing site.
