JAKARTA - 185 passengers aboard the SpiceJet flight bound for New Delhi survived after the plane was forced to make an emergency landing in the eastern Indian city of Patna when its left engine caught fire.

This incident occurred Sunday, June 19, as quoted from Channel News Asia. Passengers on a domestic flight, operated by commercial airline SpiceJet, were evacuated safely shortly after takeoff.

"The flight returned to Patna airport after local residents (on the ground) saw a fire on the left-wing of the plane and alerted airport officials," district judge Chandrashekhar Singh told reporters.

"All 185 passengers were unloaded safely. The reason for the fire was a technical fault. The engineering team is analyzing it," Singh added.

"The pilot announced there were some problems and we were going back to Patna....it was quite scary," said Pacifica, one of the passengers.

It is suspected that a bird hit the engine as a trigger for the fire.
