Talking To Diplomats And Top Officials Of The Chinese Communist Party, Here's What President Biden's Advisor Discussed

JAKARTA - United States National Security Adviser to President Joe Biden, Jake Sullivan spoke with former diplomat and Politburo official of the Chinese Communist Party Yang Jiechi.

The talks between the two took place on the sidelines of a heated relationship between Washington and Beijing, although both sides are still trying to maintain diplomatic contacts.

At a White House briefing, Sullivan said he discussed the possibility of a nuclear or missile test carried out by North Korea on the sidelines of President Biden's planned visits to South Korea and Japan.

"I spoke with my Chinese partner this morning, and covered this DPRK issue," Sullivan said of the phone call with Yang.

The United States is prepared to make short-term and long-term adjustments to its military posture to ensure defense and deterrence for its allies in the region, Sullivan said.

The United States has been pushing for more UN sanctions against North Korea, but China and Russia have signaled opposition.

Sullivan gave no further details on the call, but the White House said earlier in a statement that he and Yang had discussed Russia's war against Ukraine and "specific issues in US-China relations." Sullivan and Yang last met in Rome, Italy in March.

China has been known to refuse to condemn Russian President Vladimir Putin's actions, criticizing Western sanctions against Russia, but senior US officials say they have not detected any open Chinese military and economic support for Russia.

Meanwhile, Yang Jiechi warned Jake Sullivan, the United States was "on the wrong path" regarding Taiwan and its actions could lead to a "dangerous situation".

"The US has adopted the wrong narrative and actions that interfere with China's domestic politics and are harmful to China's interests," Yang said, citing SCMP from CCTV.

"China has made a firm and strong response. The US must do as it says so that Sino-US relations get back on the path of healthy and stable development," he said.

"The recent actions taken by the US on Taiwan-related matters are in stark contrast to their statements. If the US continues to play the Taiwan card and goes further down the wrong path, this will certainly lead to a dangerous situation," Yang stressed.

He added that China will steadfastly take actions that defend its sovereignty and security interests, doing what they say.
