JAKARTA - There are 11 out of 15 major conflicts that occurred in Indonesia and claimed thousands of people's lives due to injustice. This statement came from the 10th and 12th Vice Presidents of the Republic of Indonesia, Jusuf Kalla.

"From our experience as a nation for 77 years, we understand that there are at least 15 major conflicts that have hit this country which have resulted in the death of a thousand people. Of those 15 conflicts, 11 are due to injustice, namely social, political and economic injustice," said Jusuf Kalla, as quoted by Antara, Friday, January 14.

He said this when he was a resource person in the Didik J Rachbini Political Economy Forum Twitter Spaces discussion entitled "Cak Nur, Pancasila, and a Just Indonesia", monitored from Jakarta, Friday, January 14.

Jusuf Kalla said that one example of the 11 major conflicts due to injustice was the conflict in Aceh. The conflict in Aceh, he said, occurred because of the emergence of a sense of economic injustice within the community.

"Aceh is one of the regions with abundant natural resources, but this wealth has not been able to provide economic prosperity evenly to its people," said Jusuf Kalla.

Jusuf Kalla views the issue of injustice in the country as urgently needed to be resolved. He added that in Pancasila as the basis of the Indonesian state, the word fair is contained in two precepts, namely the second and fifth precepts which read "Just and civilized humanity" and "Social justice for all Indonesian people."

Thus, according to him, the two precepts give the nuance that justice is an effort that must be fought for by the entire Indonesian nation to achieve progress. "Even though it is fair and progressive, it is not easy to implement, but it must be done," said Jusuf Kalla.

In the discussion which is also a series of Paramadina University's 24th Anniversary, Jusuf Kalla said efforts to realize justice and progress need to be supported by good government management and improvements in the economic and social fields.

"Economic and social fields can increase prosperity so as to achieve justice," said Jusuf Kalla.
