The Basarnas Finds 2 Bodies Of Drowned Boys In Maros

MAKASSAR - The South Sulawesi National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) team found the bodies of two children who were swept away by the current of the Sulawan River, Puncak Hamlet, Tompobulu District, Maros Regency, South Sulawesi.

"The joint SAR team has found the two victims in the same location, approximately 200 meters from the location where they are suspected of falling," said Head of the South Sulawesi Basarnas Office, Djunaidi, quoted by Antara, Wednesday, January 12.

The two boys, named Zakir (4) and Faiz (5), were previously reported missing and allegedly fell and were swept away by the current of the Suwalan River on Tuesday, January 11 at around 15.30 p.m. local time.

After the report was received at the Makassar Basarnas Com Center at around 17.00 p.m., said Djunaidi, Basarnas personnel equipped with a team of divers were immediately dispatched to search for victims.

The first day of the search, the victim had not been found, so the search effort was temporarily suspended and resumed this Wednesday. The search team managed to find Zakir's body at around 11.45 a.m. at a depth of two meters by divers from a distance of 200 meters where the victim fell and drowned.

Then, the body of the second boy, Faiz, was found not far from where the first victim was found. Both were found dead.

"Both of them have been evacuated to the Tompobulu Health Center. With the discovery of these two victims, the SAR operation is declared closed and all elements return to their respective agencies," said Djunaidi who is also the SAR Mission Coordinator.

He also thanked all elements involved in carrying out the search operation so that the victim was found even though he was dead.

Previously, the family looked for their whereabouts because they had not returned. The victim's uncle then found the footprints of a small child on the riverbank and called residents to join in the search.

Later, the sandals worn by one of the victims were found about 10 meters from the footprints. Furthermore, after the joint SAR team arrived at the location, together with local residents, they searched the location until 19.00 p.m.

However, no signs were found so the search was temporarily suspended and continued the next day until the bodies of the two were found.
