DENPASAR - A video recording of the appearance of twin rainbows simultaneously in Bali has gone viral on social media.

The appearance of the twin rainbows was recorded when a resident immortalized it on a ship in the middle of the sea.

"Twin rainbows were observed from the Nusa Penida Sea, to Kusamba, Klungkung, Sunday (12/12)," reads the caption for the upload on social media accounts.

The Coordinator for Data and Information at the Center for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BBMKG) Region III Denpasar, Dwi Hartanto, said the twin rainbow phenomenon was rare.

"Twin rainbow phenomena are rare," said Dwi when confirmed, Monday, December 13.

According to Dwi, the twin rainbow phenomenon occurs when light reflects off of raindrops twice. Usually, the second rainbow, continued Dwi, the light is not so clear.

"Twin rainbows occur because of a process that is almost the same as rainbows in general. Twin rainbows are born when the light that bounces off the raindrops occurs twice. Usually, the second rainbow does not look real and clear from the first rainbow," Dwi explained.

According to Dwi, the phenomenon of twin rainbows does not only appear in the rainy season, but in the dry season, it can appear.

"There is also rain in the dry season, which causes light to refract, resulting in a rainbow," said Dwi.
