JAKARTA - At least 46 people, mostly tourists from North Macedonia, died when a bus caught fire on a highway in western Bulgaria on Tuesday, officials said.

Children were among the victims, with seven survivors requiring treatment for burns rushed to hospital in the capital Sofia, senior Bulgarian interior ministry official Nikolai Nikolov told private television BTV.

"At least 45 people died after a bus caught fire and crashed, or crashed and then caught fire", Nikolov said, citing Reuters November 23. His ministry later updated the number of victims to 46. A total of 53 people were on board.

While launching TASS, of the number of victims who died, 12 of them were children who were on the bus.

The accident occurred on the Struma highway about 45 km (28 miles) west of Sofia at around 2:00 a.m. (0000 GMT). The crash site was closed and Bulgarian interim Prime Minister, Stefan Yanev, rushed to the site.

Separately, an official from Sofia's makeshift hospital said seven people were receiving treatment after jumping out of a burning bus. Everything is in stable condition.

North Macedonian Foreign Minister Bujar Osmani said the group on the bus was on their way back to Skopje from a weekend trip to Istanbul, Turkey.
