JAKARTA - Nino Kayam, who is familiarly called Nino RAN, believes that the lack of competition for songwriters is one of the problems that exists in the current Indonesian music ecosystem.

His opinion was conveyed during a press conference at the Ministry of Culture, Central Jakarta today, Monday, December 2.

According to Nino, there is currently no direct involvement of the government in finding new musical talents through songwriting competitions.

"I think unfortunately, the problem with Indonesian music is that there is no good songwriting platform, which is endorsed by the government," said Nino.

"It feels like with the current technological changes, everyone has very wide facilities, references and access. So if the government can create a competition to create songs for all groups," he continued.

Nino gave an example, by holding a full-supported children's songwriting competition, children's songs were helped to come to the surface.

In addition, competitions can also be made for senior songwriters, who may not have had a place in the industry.

"Actually, senior songwriters are given more arenas for them to participate in the veteran songwriting competition, for example," said the RAN vocalist.

"Because we can't deny it, many Indonesian songs are made that are evergreen thanks to the song creation competition. If it can be turned on, it will be very good," he added.

Responding to what Nino, Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon said was good. He felt the proposal could be implemented soon.

"We'll just do it right away. It makes a lot of sense. Maybe this can be an aspiration, young people from various competitions create songs. That's very interesting. I see children's songs rarely seen now," said Fadli.

For information, songwriting competitions are not foreign in the Indonesian music industry. In the early 1970s to the 1990s, there was the Indonesian Popular Song Festival, an event for songwriters, where the winner would record and be included in the compilation album.
