Matchbox Twenty Made Fun Of In Barbie Film, This Is Rob Thomas' Response

JAKARTA - Rob Thomas from Matchbox Twenty responded to one of his songs featured in the Barbie film.

The American songwriters discussed the song Matchbox Twenty, Push, which was featured in the film directed by Greta Gerwig, and confirmed that she was fine with the film that made fun of her 1997 hit song.

Moments in the film emerged after Ken played by Ryan Gosling returned to Barbie after visiting the human world and discovering patriarchy.

From there, he turned a woman-dominated Barbie world into a very masculine "Kendom", full of everything related to toxic masculinity.

Push then became the song he, as well as all the other Kens, made Barbie entertainers on the beach. They performed the song for hours.

Although the moment was meant to make fun of Matchbox Twenty for being the 'ultimate bro band', it turned out that the vocalist really didn't mind that the song was used as a joke.

"I want to start this by saying that I think it's funny," he said while talking to USA Today, also referring to other times his band was used as a joke on Hollywood blockbuster.

But in the film Bring It On, [the character of Good Luck Dunst] has this doodle-y girlfriend. And there is a scene where he is in his dorm room with a Matchbox Twenty poster background. There is a period during the 90s where our success is getting bigger, our targets are getting bigger. We take down easily.

He continued, given how he was told earlier about the partition of the song in the Barbie film, and how he was fine with it - especially because of his preference for director Greta Gerwig.

When I got a call for the Barbie film, they told me, 'Ken was near the counts, he played a song and it was his favorite band. So I did this by thinking I would be the target of a joke, and I was fine with it. I'm immune enough,' he explained.

But Julie Greenwald [from Atlantic Records] came to the Hollywood Bowl a month or two ago. She just watched the film and said, 'You came out of there loving Ken and loving Push'. And I was like, 'Aww. fine, very good!'

"Also, Greta Gerwig has been one of the people I admire forever... So the fact that it doesn't reduce my love for Greta, it's even better."

Thomas, who is currently on tour with the band to promote their latest album Where The Light Goes, also recently dedicated the song to Barbie film actor Ryan Gosling. Check out the footage of the moment that fans have caught below.
