JAKARTA - Ed Sheeran will release an album titled -(Subtract) on May 5 through Asylum/Atlantic. This is his last mathematical album for a decade.

Previously, the singer who was born in West Yorkshire, England released four albums titled "mathematic symbol", including + (2011), \times (2014), outside (2017), = (2021).

The album - written and produced by Sheeran with Aaron Dessner of The National is also an acoustic-based album written and rewritten with the singer's personal chaos background.

"I've been working on Subtract for a decade, trying to carve out a perfect acoustic album, writing and recording hundreds of songs with a clear vision of what I think should be," Sheeran explained in a statement.

"Then in early 2022, a series of events changed my life, my mental health, and finally the way I look at music and art," Sheeran continued.

'Writing songs is my therapy. It helps me understand my feelings. I write without thinking about what song to make, I only write whatever comes up. And in just a week, I replaced my one-decade job with my deepest thoughts.

In a month, my pregnant wife was told that she had a tumor, with no way of treatment until after giving birth. My best friend Jamal [Edwards], my brother, died suddenly and I found myself standing in court defending my integrity and career as a songwriter. I went around through fear, depression, and anxiety.

"I feel like drowning, head under the surface, looking up but couldn't penetrate the air.

"As an artist, I don't feel able to credible put works into a world that doesn't accurately represent my existence and how I need to express myself at this time in my life."

"This album is so pure. It opens the door of the trap into my soul. For the first time I didn't try to make an album that people liked, I only took out something honest and true where I was in my adult life.

"This is the entry of the daily book last February and the way I understand it. This is Subtract."
