JAKARTA - The Volkswagen Golf GTI is a successful global automotive icon since its birth in 1976 and is known as a compact hatchback that boasts impressive performance.

Recently, VW introduced a special edition Volkswagen Golf GTI 380 model for 2024, and this will be the last Golf GTI to be equipped with a manual transmission.

The car will only be available in North America, as a celebration of the legacy of the manual transmission in VW hot hatches of recent years from the Golf GTI and Golf R.

"The GTI 380 is our way of honoring fans who for more than four decades have remained loyal to the GTI with a manual transmission," said Petar Danilovic, Senior Vice President of Product Marketing & Strategy from VW America in his official statement, Wednesday, August 30.

The "380" refers to the eighth generation internal code model, the Mk8. This is a tradition followed by previous GTIs, such as the GTI 337 which referred to the fourth generation in 2002.

The VW Golf GTI 380 looks impressive, with 19-inch multi-spoke rims in gloss black taken from the Golf R 20th Anniversary Edition. A touch of gloss black is also seen on the top of the car with the GTI's signature red accents. This car is also equipped with the DCC adaptive damper system and comes in several variants, namely S, SE and Autobahn.

Inside, VW honors the history of the GTI by adding a golf ball-shaped manual gearshift knob, which has been a signature in every generation. For the S and SE trims, classic Scalepaper Plaid cloth seats are a highlight. Meanwhile, for the Autobahn trim, Vienna leather is standard, and for the SE trim, it is optional.

Despite a number of special features, VW has retained the 2.0-liter turbocharged EA888 4-cylinder engine that is also used in the rest of the 2024 Golf GTI line-up.

This engine is capable of producing an impressive 241 hp and a maximum torque of 370 Nm. A big contribution to this impressive performance comes from the six-speed manual transmission.

VW has confirmed that the hot hatch will be available this fall, with prices starting at USD 32,485 or around IDR 494.9 million to USD 40,625 or equivalent to IDR 618.9 million. This price does not include shipping costs.
