Intentions of Fasting Eid Al Adha

JAKARTA - Eid al -Adha falls on July 20 this year. During Eid al -Adha and three days later, Muslims are forbidden to fast.

However, before Eid al -Adha, there are 3 types of fasting that can be done. Here are the types, schedules, intentions of fasting before Eid al-Adha.

1. Dzulhijjah fast

Dzulhijjah fasting is one of the noble practices that was never abandoned by the Prophet SAW during his life. This fast is performed on the first 10 days of Dzulhijjah, precisely on 1-7 Dzulhijjah.

In a narration from Hafshah Ra says:

"Four things that were never abandoned by the Prophet SAW, namely: fasting Ashura (10 Muharram), fasting 10 days in the month of Dzulhijjah, fasting 3 days each month, and praying 2 rak'ahs before the dawn prayer (dawn)." (HR. Ahmad and An-Nasa'i).

This year, the fast of Dzulhijjah falls on 11-17 July 2021. Here is the reading of the intention of the fast of Dzulhijjah: "Nawaitu shouma syahri dzil hijjah sunnatan lillahi ta'ala".

Meaning: I intend to fast the sunnah of the month of Dzulhijjah because of Allah Ta'ala.

2. Tarwiyah fasting

Tarwiyah fast is a fast performed on the 8th day of the month of Dzulhijjah. In a narration, it is mentioned that the virtues of Tarwiyah fasting are like fasting for a full year.

"Whoever fasts for 10 days, then for each day it is like fasting for a month. And, for fasting on the day of Tarwiyah it is like fasting for a year, while for fasting on the day of Arafah it is like fasting for two years." (Narrated by Ali Al-Muairi, At-Thibbi, Abu Sholeh, and Ibn Abbas).

This year, Tarwiyah fasting falls on Sunday, July 18, 2021. Here is the reading of the intention of Tarwiyah fasting: "Nawaitu shouma tarwiyata sunnatan lillahi ta'ala."

Meaning: I intend to fast Tarwiyah, sunnah because of God Almighty.

3. Fasting of Arafah

The fast of Arafah is a fast performed on the 9th day of the month of Dzulhijjah. Exactly 1 day before Eid al -Adha. In a hadith narrated by Imam Muslims, the priority of fasting Arafah will remove the sins of one year ago and one year to come.

This year, the fast of Arafah falls on Monday, July 19, 2021. Here is the reading of the intention of the fast of Arafah before Eid al -Adha: "Nawaitu shouma arafata sunnatan lillahi ta'ala."

Meaning: I intend to fast the sunnah of Arafat because of Allah Ta'ala.

Remember, the fasting of Eid al-Adha is done before the feast. Tasyrik Day is a celebration for Muslims that falls on the 11th, 12th, and 13th of the month of Zulhijjah of the Hijri calendar. On this blessed day, Muslims are encouraged to enjoy food and drink as a form of gratitude for the blessings of Allah SWT, and fasting is forbidden.
