JAKARTA - Many people with oily skin think that moisturizing use will only worsen their face condition. However, in reality, oily skin still requires hydration.

Excess oil production can be a signal that the skin is dehydrated, and in response, the sebaceous gland produces more sebum. So, maintaining skin moisture is an important step to balance these conditions.

A dermatologist who graduated from the University of Indonesia, dr. Riris Asti Respati, Sp.DVE, emphasized that moisturizers are still needed by all skin types, including oily skin. In a discussion in Jakarta, Monday, he explained that miskrah is still circulating in the community regarding the use of moisturizers.

"Many still believe that oily skin does not need moisturizing. In fact, it still has to be used to keep the skin balanced," he said.

Riris explained that several cases of oily skin were actually triggered by drought. When the skin loses its moisture, the body responds by increasing oil production to protect the skin's surface.

"Because it is dry, the skin can react to producing excessive oil as compensation," he added.

In the routine of facial care or skincare, the main goal is to keep the skin stable, not too dry and also not too oily. Riris also highlighted that the assumption about cream or skincare causes dependence to be a wrong myth.

"The concept is not dependence, but continuous care. Just like bathing every day, taking care of the skin also needs to be done regularly to maintain his health," he explained.

According to Riris, one of the most common skin problems experienced by the Indonesian people is hyperpigmentation or black spots, in addition to fine lines and wrinkles.

"Most of the main problems of Indonesian skin are black spots and premature aging," he said.

For this reason, he recommends the use of basic skincare with a one-on-one approach, namely by choosing products that suit the needs of each skin. Recommended products include cleaners (such as facial soap or micellar water), moisturizers, sunscreens, and night creams when needed.

"Skincare functions to keep skin condition optimal, not to make skin suddenly perfect without care. The goal is not to be separated from products, but to ensure that the skin continues to be treated properly," he concluded.
