Newly Inaugurated, LSF Members For The 2024-2028 Period Promise To Respect Creative Freedom Of Indonesian Filmmakers

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) inaugurated 17 members of the Film Censorship Institute (LSF) for the period 2024-2028 to strengthen the quality of the Indonesian film ecosystem on Wednesday, August 28.

The LSF insists that to date, filmmakers have understood these limitations and are trying to create measurable works without being excessive in terms of sadistic or exploitation.

In the midst of widespread issues related to exploitation in films, including exploitation of tragedy, religion, and other practices, the Film Censorship Institute (LSF) explained that film censorship policies in democratic countries currently respect creative freedom.

Deputy Chairperson of the LSF for the period 2024-2028 Noorca Marendra Massardi said no restrictions were directly applied to the films produced.

"This is in a democratic country, film censorship really respects freedom of creativity, there are no restrictions, we never make cuts again, we only submit recommendations if there are certain scenes that we value contrary to norms," said Masardi after the handover of the new LSF members in the Senayan area, Jakarta, Thursday, August 30.

The censorship process is only in the form of recommendations to film owners, if there are certain scenes that are considered contrary to the norms of the community.

The recommendations are in the form of requests for these scenes to be revised, but the revision is entirely the responsibility of the film owner.

In terms of themes and genres, each creator, sinias, and producer has the right to produce works. Works with the theme horror, religion, and other genres are part of a natural variety of people's tastes.

"Well, if there are any themes, any genre, it's the right of every creator, filmmaker, producer to produce them. Horror themes, religious themes, if there are many enthusiasts, I think it's something natural, natural, according to people's tastes as well," he said.

More clearly, according to him, LSF only focuses on monitoring so that excessive exploitation or offending certain groups does not occur.
