JAKARTA - The University of Indonesia Hospital (RSUI) successfully underwent surgery to remove the first megaprosthesis giant club tumor carried out by the hospital.

This operation is the result of the development of medical technology in handling cases of bone tumors or soft tissues around bones that previously often led to amputation.

"If previously the majority of cases like this were amputated, now with megaprosthesis innovation (implant), patients can be saved from losing their members of the movement," said Orthopaedi Specialist and Traumatology Consultant Oncology Orthopaedi and Reconstruction RSUI dr. Muhammad Rizqi Adhi Primaputra, Sp.OT(K) in his statement in Jakarta, Wednesday.

He explained that one of the surgical actions aimed at removing the tumor was the limb salvage megaprosthesis. This action is a bone rescue procedure from amputation by replacing the bone damaged by a tumor or cancer using a megaprosthesis implant, a special implant designed to replace the lost bone structure.

With the advancement of medical technology and increasingly sophisticated surgical techniques, megaprosthesis limb salvage operations now allow patients to maintain optimal motion functions and resume self-moving after the tumor is removed.

According to Rizqi, lamb salvage surgery operations can only be carried out under conditions where blood vessels and major nerves are still free from tumor cells, and most muscle tissue can still be saved.

The lamb salvage megaprosthesis operation was carried out by a team of doctors led by Rizqi in male patients aged 29 years who had tame but aggressive tumors that caused severe damage to the bone structure around the knee.

The first patient to undergo this procedure at RSUI has a 10-cm tumor, causing severe pain, swelling, and decreased extremity or movement function. In early symptoms, it appears with progressive pain, either the intensity gets heavier or gets more frequent.

After surgery, patients can undergo a treatment period of three to five days, and can already walk around with the help of tools such as sticks. This shows a significant potential for functional recovery in a relatively short time.

The operation was successfully carried out for seven hours smoothly. The action included complexes due to removing a relatively large tumor. After the tumor is released from a healthy tissue, the action is followed by implant installation," said Rizqi.
