JAKARTA - Minister of Culture Fadli Zon highlighted the development of artificial intelligence or AI which is increasingly entering the creative industry, including the film industry. Fadli conveyed this when meeting with professors of humanities from various universities at the Ministry of Culture Office, Senayan, Jakarta, Thursday, August 13.
The meeting was a follow-up to the National Symposium of Professors of Humanities entitled Trajectory and Urgency of Humanities for the Future which was held at the University of Indonesia on August 11-13, 2026.
According to Fadli, the development of technology must still be placed within the framework of human interests. Therefore, the humanities cannot be separated from STEM or science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
"It is impossible for STEM to run without humanities, because in the end it must be based on human and humanitarian interests," said Fadli.
He said STEM gives the ability to create technology and knowledge, while the humanities are needed to ensure that their use takes into account ethics, morals, and humanity.
Fadli also assessed that universities have an important role in maintaining and developing knowledge about Indonesia's cultural wealth.
"We have so many assets, there needs to be one institutionalization, including in it regarding knowledge. This can only be done in the field of education," he said.
According to Fadli, from universities, thinkers and researchers are born who can continue the preservation, utilization, and new development of cultural assets.
The Dean of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences of the University of Indonesia, Untung Yuwono, said the symposium was held to respond to changes in civilization, strengthen the position of humanities, and answer national issues through a multidisciplinary approach.
Fadli said the Ministry of Culture opened a room for cooperation with universities because cultural development could not be done by the government alone.
"The central government must work together with all ministries or agencies, local governments, the private sector, and of course with universities," said Fadli.
