JAKARTA - PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) or KAI noted that total freight transportation reached 39.2 million tons during the period January to July 2025.

This figure shows an increase compared to last year which was recorded at 38.9 million tons.

KAI Vice President Public Relations Anne Purba said one of the biggest achievements came from coal transportation, which reached 82.83 percent of total transportation, with a volume of 32,496,076 tons.

Anne said this success is not only a number, but also a big contribution to the community. Most of the coal transported by KAI is distributed to power plants in Java and Bali which are very important to maintain the stability of the national electricity supply.

"For us, energy distribution is not just a matter of logistics. This is about ensuring life continues from households that require lighting to MSMEs that depend on energy to run their business," said Anne in an official statement, Tuesday, August 5.

Anne said KAI continues to maintain service quality by involving certified human resources and conducting periodic inspections of facilities and infrastructure.

"This ensures that all operations run safely and on time, as well as reduce the potential for external disturbances, such as illegal levies that often appear in highway-based transportation," he explained.

In the future, KAI targets the volume of goods transport to grow by 15 percent in 2029, with coal transportation reaching 111.2 million tons and non-coal commodities at 10.9 million tons.

This plan will be driven by the development of major logistics nodes, especially in the South Sumatra region. One of the main initiatives is the construction of Tarahan II Terminal which is estimated to be able to absorb up to 18 million tons of coal, as well as the development of facilities in Kertapati which will increase capacity to 7 million tons," he said.

Anne said that South Sumatra is expected to be the main contributor to increasing the volume of goods transportation, with an additional projection of 27.8 million tons, making this area an important pillar in the future logistics map of KAI.

"With this projection, we want to continue to invest and grow with the national logistics industry. Trains are not just a means of transportation, but also a driving force for economic progress that brings real benefits to many people," concluded Anne.
