JAKARTA - PT Adaro Energy Tbk plans to diversify its business into the green energy segment "Adaro Green Initiative" which is designed to be the business pillar of the 9th largest coal mining company in Indonesia.

"This year the Adaro Green Initiative will be realized", said President Director of Adaro Energy, conglomerate Garibaldi Thohir as quoted by Antara, Tuesday, April 20.

This segment, said Garibaldi Thohir, complements the other eight business pillars, namely Adaro Mining, Adaro Services, Adaro Logistics, Adaro Power, Adaro Land, Adaro Water, Adaro Capital, and Adaro Foundation.

Garibaldi Thohir said that one form of green energy that the issuer coded as ADRO will work on is biomass by utilizing wood pellets and palm oil waste.

"Companies that run green energy can involve subsidiaries, take over other companies, partner with other parties. We do all three", he said.

Garibaldi, who is familiarly called Boy Thohir, said that in several countries of Adaro's partners had started combining coal and biomass as fuel. This is because even in terms of emissions, the waste substances produced by biomass are classified as more environmentally friendly.

"Entering the green energy business is taken seriously with a certain size. Green energy is by the company's vision to support the development of a greener world, and provide benefits to Indonesia and the world", he said.

Also, Adaro has the opportunity to develop hydrogen energy as a future fuel, as has been done by global companies, including Toyota, Hyundai, and Honda.

"Hydrogen has been developed in several countries. We are also looking at opportunities in hydrogen energy", he said.

In the power generation segment, Adaro is also exploring solar power plants, hydroelectric power plants, and wind power plants that use solar panels and hydropower plants.

Even though Boy revealed that he entered the green energy industry, Adaro still did not leave all the coal business that has been the backbone of the company.

According to records, Adaro is targeting total coal production volume in 2021 to be 52 million tonnes to 54 million tonnes by 2021.

Meanwhile, production of high-calorie coal (coking coal) in 2021 is targeted at around 2.4 million tons to 2.5 million tons, an increase of almost two times compared to the realization of production in 2020 of around 1.5 million tons.
