JAKARTA - The Association of Indonesian Food and Beverage Entrepreneurs (Gapmmi) received a report from local salt producers that they were no longer able to supply for the needs of the food and beverage industry (mamin) until the upcoming Eid moment.

General Chairperson of Gapmmi Adhi S. Lukman said, based on the letter they received, there was a salt producer that could no longer produce salt this January.

"We received a notification from the salt producer, some are no longer able to produce and do not have stock as of January, some are as of February, some are as of March. So, this is very urgent that it must be handled," Adhi told reporters, quoted Thursday, January 16.

Adhi has also met with the Minister of Industry (Menperin) Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita to convey the difficulties faced by the food and beverage industry.

The need for salt for the food and beverage industry reaches 600,000 tons and can be met by local salt farmers. Unfortunately, of this figure, only about 300,000 tons can be used for production.

"I really hope that we don't have to import, but how do we find solutions. If domestically it is not available, of course we must have a solution so that the food industry does not stop production," he said.

According to Adhi, the food and beverage industry also does not have much stock for salt raw materials. Stock only lasts until March or Japan at the moment of Eid.

"Of course we have to find a way so that the food and beverage industry is not disrupted by production, especially now before Eid," he said.

Referring to Presidential Regulation (Perpres) Number 126 of 2022 concerning National Trade Development, salt imports are only given to the Chlor Alkali Plant (CAP) industry. So far, Indonesia has imported 2.9 million tons of salt from the total salt requirement of 4.9 million tons per year.

Therefore, the government is asked to meet the needs of the raw materials for the food and beverage industry as soon as possible.
