JAKARTA - The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) welcomes the development of a shrimp hatchery by the private sector in South Lampung Regency, Lampung Province.
Director General of Aquaculture KKP Haeru Rahayu said quality improvements played a major role in supporting national shrimp productivity in terms of yield and competitiveness.
"The presence of Post Larva Haji Agus (PLHA) not only answers the needs of quality seeds, but also opens jobs and benefits for local communities. This is very good to support our shrimp industry," said the man who is familiarly called Tebe in his official statement, written Monday, September 22.
According to him, the increase in hatchery investment, environmentally friendly technology support and the solid collaboration between the government, associations and business actors, can strengthen Indonesia's position in the global shrimp market, which was valued at US$64.9 billion last year. This value is projected to continue to soar to US$ 140.4 billion in 2034.
Currently, Indonesia is said to be ranked fifth in the world's shrimp producers after China, Vietnam, Ecuador and India. Indonesia's main export markets are the United States, European Union, Japan, and China.
"Residents buyers are now very strict in assessing product quality and tracing. Therefore, quality seeds are the key to producing quality and competitive shrimp in the global market," he said.
PLHA Agus owners revealed that the construction of the hatchery was driven by the large demand for shrimp seeds. According to him, the hatchery is not just a production site, but a symbol of improving the quality of life of the community through labor absorption, provision of reliable and quality fry consistently.
He said PLHA had recruited more than 60 percent of the workforce from local communities. "In addition to focusing on increasing the production of quality shrimp seeds, PLHA is committed to paying attention to environmental aspects through wastewater treatment (IPAL) installations," he explained.

Apart from PLHA, in Lampung there are other private hatchlers such as Uus's which is located in Kalianda, South Lampung. He revealed that the success of the improvement effort was due to the parent shrimp Nusa Dewa as a result of the innovation of the Technical Implementation Unit of the Directorate General of Aquaculture and the Karangasem Superior Shrimp and Information Main Production Center (BPIUUK).
According to Uus, the hatchery he manages is capable of producing up to 90 million Nauplii shrimp Nusa Dewa per month. These results are to meet the needs of the domestic market, even up to Singapore. Nusa Dewa's shrimp seeds have high durability and rapid growth, so that the market is in demand.
"Buyers from Singapore convey satisfaction with the quality of the Nusa Dewa shrimp seeds. The level of activity reaches 90 percent. In fact, when compared to fry from Vietnam and India, the results remain superior because their growth is flat and stable," he explained.
