JAKARTA - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded a deflation in January 2025 which was recorded at 0.76 percent on a monthly basis or month to month (mom) or lower than in December 2024 which was recorded at 0.44 percent.

"In January 2025 on a monthly basis or MtM and the ytd calendar year there was a deflation of 0.76 percent or a decrease in the JCI from 106.80 in December 2024 to 105.99 in January 2025," said Plt. Head of BPS, Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti at a press conference, Monday, February 3.

According to Amalia in January 2025, monthly figures or month to month and calendar year or year to date, are the same because the comparison is the same, namely early January 2025.

Amalia said that deflation in January 2025 was the first deflation after the last September 2024.

Meanwhile, the largest monthly deflation contributor group was from housing, water, electricity and household fuel groups with a deflation of 9.16 percent. Amalia explained that this group contributed 1.44 percent to deflation.

Amalia said that the dominant commodity driving the group's deflation was the electricity tariff whose contribution to deflation was 1.47 percent.

Meanwhile, other commodities that also contributed to deflation were tomatoes with deflation of 0.03 percent, cucumber, train fares and air transportation rates with deflation of 0.01 percent each.

"However, there are commodities that contribute to inflation, including red chili and cayenne pepper, each with a share of 0.19 percent and 0.17 percent of inflation, fresh fish, cooking oil and gasoline, each contributing 0.03 percent of inflation," he said.

Amalia said that based on its components, the deflation that occurred in January 2025 was driven by the government's regulated price component.

Meanwhile, the core component experienced inflation of 0.30 percent, where this component contributed 0.20 percent of inflation.

According to Amalia, the commodities that are dominant in providing inflation are cooking oil, gold jewelry, house rental costs, powdered coffee, cars and motorcycles.

Furthermore, the group for the price component is regulated by the government to experience a deflation of 7.38 percent where this component contributes to deflation by 1.44 percent, mainly due to electricity rates, air transportation rates and train rates.

"For components, volatile prices experience inflation of 2.95 percent. This component contributes 0.48 percent of inflation. The commodities that dominantly contribute to inflation in volatile price components are red chili, cayenne pepper and chicken meat," he said.

Amalia said that monthly deflation occurred in the midst of the government's policy of providing a 50 percent discount on electricity rates for PLN customers up to 2200 VA, an increase in non-subsidized fuel prices, an increase in retail prices for tobacco products, and forest bulk criteria for medium and above normal so that it had an impact on horticultural production.
