JAKARTA - Minister of Industry (Menperin) Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita broke the narrative or view of the textile and textile product (TPT) industry as the sunset industry sector.

"I am afraid that this narrative was deliberately made so that Indonesia would no longer pay attention to or support the national textile industry. So, we just let it go, we include imported goods," said Minister of Industry Agus in his official statement, Saturday, June 8, 2024.

The Minister of Industry said that based on data from the Industrial Trust Index (IKI) survey in the last two months, the TPT industry, which is part of 23 recorded sub-sectors, shows expansive performance.

"This is thanks to the hard work of all stakeholders. Alhamdulillah, for almost five years I have been Minister of Industry, finally the TPT industry managed to perform brilliantly," he said.

As for the first quarter of 2024, the TPT industry began to show significant performance improvements, which GDP experienced growth of 2.64 percent on an annual basis or year on year (yoy).

Thus, quarter-on-quarter increased by 5.92 percent compared to the fourth quarter of 2023 which contracted -1.15 percent.

The positive performance of the TPT industry is also reflected in the achievement of its export value in the first quarter of 2024 which increased by 0.19 percent or 2.95 billion US dollars.

According to Agus, this performance improvement is also a contribution from e-commerce, where there is a growth in people's preferences towards local brands.

"Of course, this increase in consumption should be welcomed as an opportunity for our textile industry to meet domestic needs," he added.
