JAKARTA - Sun Life Indonesia in collaboration with Beyond Sport and a number of local residents have renovated the basketball field in Tanah Baru, Depok. Today, forty volunteers consisting of the community and Sun Life employees work together to repair the field by installing modular tiles, painting walls, and planting trees to create a cool and comfortable atmosphere for local residents.

This newly renovated field is expected to be operational soon, and is part of Sun Life's 29-year investment in realizing the welfare of the people in Indonesia.

This field renovation activity is also part of the Hoops + Health program worth IDR 10 billion between Sun Life and the Beyond Sport foundation to increase physical activity and a healthy lifestyle among underprivileged Asian youth. By taking advantage of the popularity of basketball, this initiative is an extension of Sun Life's commitment to the welfare of youth and society.

Until the second quarter of 2024, this program has successfully renovated several fields in Asia, such as in Laguna (Philippines), Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam), Hong Kong, and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia).

Being 25 kilometers south of Jakarta, Tanah Baru, Depok is a densely populated area where basketball courts are one of the free recreational facilities managed and used by the entire community. Unfortunately, the basketball court in this area has suffered severe damage.

For this reason, Sun Life together with Beyond Sport and the local community repainted the futsal line, as well as making additional volleyball lines so that this basketball field can be used for various sports activities, as well as improving health for the 1,500 families around it.

"Improving welfare through a healthy lifestyle is a commitment that we will continue to strive for. In Sun Life, we recognize the importance of implementing a healthy and active lifestyle to create welfare holistically. Through our partnership with Beyond Sport, we take advantage of the popularity of basketball to promote a healthy lifestyle, encourage increased physical activity, and contribute to creating a healthier future for the younger generation in Asia, including Indonesia," said Kah Jing Lee as Sun Life Indonesia's Chief Client Officer, in a statement, Wednesday, May 29.

In addition to field repairs, the ASA Foundation, Sun Life partners in six Hoops + Health program locations will also provide guidance for prospective basketball coaches in June. This development aims to improve skills and knowledge around basketball as a means to improve physical health and well-being among the younger generation.

Not only that, weekly basketball activities will also be held for free and allow prospective coaches to apply their learning. Currently, Sun Life and Beyond Sport are also considering coaching additional prospective coaches.

"Relationships between individuals, solidarity, and cooperation are the main focus of the Hoops + Health program," said Executing Director of Beyond Sport, Adam

That's why we are so enthusiastic about involving Sun Life employees as volunteers together with local residents. Basketball field renovations are our goal, but behind that, we also want to create a collaborative environment that can strengthen relations between communities, increase pride, and foster a sense of belonging to joint facilities in an effort to create a healthier lifestyle.

The revitalization of basketball fields in Tanah Baru, Depok, is part of Sun Life's efforts to improve the welfare of Indonesian youth. This includes the Global Philanthropy Program Build Our Kids' Success (BOKS) which has succeeded in reaching more than 26,000 students in 102 elementary schools in Indonesia through its physical activity program and the activities of Brighter School 2023 volunteers, which is a continuation of the program where Sun Life has developed medical facilities, sports, and parks at Cipinang Muara Elementary School 18 to create a comfortable learning environment for students.

In addition, Sun Life is also holding Celebrity & Basketball Weekend activities in Jakarta, which is part of the #MovementMatters campaign, to encourage an active and healthy lifestyle. Through this activity, Sun Life also takes advantage of the popularity of basketball, a sport that the Indonesian people really like, to organize a coaching clinic session for children and adolescents guided by professional basketball coaches.
