Despite The Suspension, The April 2024 Trade Balance Returns To A Surplus Of 3.56 Billion US Dollars

JAKARTA - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) noted that Indonesia's trade balance in April 2024 reached USD 3.56 billion. However, this surplus decreased by 5.17 percent month on month (mom) compared to the previous month.

Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics Center Agency (BPS) Pudji Ismartini said Indonesia's trade balance in April 2024 experienced a surplus of US$3.56 billion, mainly from the non-oil and gas sector of US$5.17 billion, but was induced by a deficit in the oil and gas sector worth US$1.61 billion.

"Indonesia's trade balance in April 2024 experienced a surplus of 3.56 billion US dollars or a decrease of 1.02 billion US dollars on a monthly basis," he said at a press conference, Wednesday, May 15.

Thus, Pudji said, the trade balance surplus had been going on for 48 consecutive months since May 2020, or for 4 consecutive years.

The trade balance surplus in April 2024 was lower than the previous month and on an annual basis. When compared to April 2023, the trade balance surplus fell 5.53 percent which reached 3.94 billion US dollars.

Pudji said that the trade balance surplus in April 2024 was supported by a surplus in non-oil and gas commodities (oil and gas) of 5.17 billion US dollars, with commodities contributing to the surplus being mainly mineral fuel (HS 27).

Then driven by fat and vegetable (HS 15), iron and steel (HS 72) commodities.

Pudji conveyed that the non-oil and gas trade balance surplus was lower than the previous month and in the same period last year.

At the same time, the oil and gas commodity trade balance was recorded at a deficit of 1.61 billion US dollars, with the contributor to the deficit being crude oil and oil. This oil and gas deficit is also lower than the previous month and the same month last year.

In addition, Indonesia's trade balance surplus in April 2024 was also driven by a higher export value compared to the import value.
