JAKARTA - The price of shallots soared to Rp80,000 per kilogram (kg). The Indonesian Market Traders Association (IKAPPI) also asked to accelerate the strengthening of the distribution of shallots from areas of production centers outside Java to areas where the needs are quite large.

Chairman of the IKAPPI DPP Abdullah Mansuri said the current high price of onions was due to several production centers that were flooded. So that in supply it is not as much as before.

Based on information received by IKAPPI, Abdullah said, several areas that experienced crop failure were in Central Java Province, spread across Demak Regency, Grobogan Regency, and Pati Regency.

"So it affects production nationally," he said in an official statement, Wednesday, April 24.

"We know that the price of shallots has reached Rp80,000 per kg, which means twice the normal price and the increase has reached 100 percent," he continued.

Due to this condition, Abdullah said IKAPPI asked the government to immediately accelerate the distribution of shallots from production centers outside Java to meet supplies in several areas with large needs, such as in Jabodetabek.

The option that we offer is to encourage production in Solok, West Sumatra and in Bima, NTB to be subsidized to be crossed to Jabodetabek so that supply is relatively abundant in the market. If that can be done, we believe the price will be pushed down," he said.

Furthermore, Abdulillah said the largest shallot producing area in Indonesia is in Brebes, and the second is in Demak. Meanwhile, in East Java in Nganjuk, NTB is in Bima, West Sumatra in Solok, North Sumatra and West Java.

"The Jabodetabek suppliers usually supply from Central Java and East Java, namely Brebes, Demak, Grobogan, Pati, Nganjuk and several other areas," he explained.
