JAKARTA - Ukraine will be able to import gas from Poland from March 6, 2022, including gas from Polish liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals, the operator of Ukraine's state-owned gas transit system said Saturday (5/3).

Two transit operators agree on guaranteed capacity for gas imports.

"This allows the physical import of gas from Poland, including from LNG terminals, with (capacity) guarantees," the Ukrainian company said on social media.

According to Antara, the company has not provided additional details.

Ukraine, one of Europe's biggest gas consumers, has not imported gas from Russia since 2015 and is buying it in Europe.

It was previously reported that Russia's state-owned gas company, Gazprom, was shipping the same volume of natural gas to Europe via Ukraine, ie 109.5 million cubic meters per day, on Friday, Russia's state news agency RIA said, citing a Ukrainian gas pipeline operator.

Russia's military actions in Ukraine have prompted many countries to impose economic sanctions.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on February 22 announced the suspension of the process for certifying the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline.

The Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline is estimated to be able to transport 55 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually from Russia to Germany via the Baltic Sea. However, the 1,234 kilometer long pipeline cannot yet be operated because it is waiting for permission from Germany and the European Union.

In early February, Russian President Vladimir Putin told Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing that Russia was already preparing a new deal to supply China with more gas.
