JAKARTA - PT PGN Tbk as Subholding Gas Pertamina and PT KAI conducted a Dynamic Test of LNG Technology as fuel on a train that will be used to serve passengers on the Jakarta–Surabaya route. Dynamic Test is one of a series of Pilot Projects to reduce the use of subsidized diesel.

The conversion of fuel oil to LNG fuel uses the Diesel Dual Fuel (DDF) system so that the trains that were originally powered by diesel will operate with a mixture of two fuels (gas and diesel). Gas is used as the main fuel, while diesel is used as a lighter and helps in lubrication and cooling the combustion chamber.

PGN's Director of Strategy and Business Development, Heru Setiawan, explained that before the Dynamic Test, a Static Test had been carried out on the generator train when the engine was idle. The results of the Static Test indicate that the efficiency of the engine performance is better when compared to the use of diesel fuel.

“The success of the static test will be supported by the implementation of a dynamic test, where the engine operation is tested under actual conditions. The goal is to confirm the results of the static test and test the durability of the DDF system in operational conditions", said Heru, in an official statement, Thursday, December 16.

The benefits of LNG fuel on trains that will be felt include fuel cost efficiency, lower gas engine maintenance costs, SOEs synergy, utilization of freight transport, and the potential use of PT KAI's station land for the use of environmentally friendly energy (green energy).

"The use of LNG fuel is expected to be able to realize cost efficiency and support operations as well as provide benefits for the transportation user community. Hopefully, it can be sustainable and enter the implementation stage and be beneficial for both parties and the community", said Heru.

The Dynamic Test was also attended by the Director of Engineering and Oil and Gas Environment Wakhid Hasyim, Director of Facilities Management of PT KAI, Eko Purwanto, VP Gas, Power & NRE Business Development & Portfolio of PT Pertamina (Persero) Bambang Suprihanto, and representatives of BPH Migas Management at Pasar Senen Station.

PGN and KAI continue to coordinate to obtain the demand for LNG needs and the most efficient logistics scheme in the southern region of Java. The city plans to be served include Klaten Regency, Karang Anyar Regency, and DI Yogyakarta which are divided into 2 (two) stages.

Currently, PGN has identified 4 delivery points in LNG transportation to the southern part of Java Island as a quick win. The LNG Isotank that will be used is 20 ft in size, sourced from Surabaya (Teluk Lamong).

"We are optimistic that using LNG as KAI's fuel can provide benefits for KAI and PGN Group, especially supporting the government in reducing fuel imports", said Heru.
