JAKARTA - The United States (US) has a tough job of cutting their greenhouse gas emissions in order to bring them back into alignment with the Paris Agreement. The US must reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 57 percent or 63 percent by 2030.

The 57-63 percent figure refers to the results of US greenhouse gas emissions in 2005. In addition to the Paris climate, this mission is also structured to achieve the long-term goal of the Biden administration, namely net zero emissions by 2050.

The Climate Action Tracker (CAT) analyzes Biden's plans to decarbonize the power sector, commercial buildings, and new vehicle fleets. CAT also concluded the gratuity figure above.

At least the US should limit global temperature rises to 1.5 degrees Celsius, in line with the objectives of the Paris Agreement. CAT undertakes that analysis before the US announces new commitments in the 2030 Paris Agreement.

World support

EU officials and environmental groups are calling on Washington to cut emissions by at least 50 percent this decade below 2005 levels. The strong action the US is taking will echo around the world.

That will encourage other countries to step up to adopt the kind of targets they need to make global net-zero a reality, said Bill Hare of Climate Analytics, which is a partner of CAT with the NewClimate Institute.

Other environmental groups, including the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), joined by the World Resources Institute, Environmental Defense Fund, Natural Resources Defense Council, have combined about a 50 percent reduction target for 2030.

The Biden climate team, led by National Climate Advisor Gina McCarthy and Climate Envoy John Kerry, works with all government agencies and holds meetings with utility and auto companies to work out new goals.

The CAT report said the Biden administration's plans to decarbonize the US electricity sector by 2035 are consistent with the direction of the Paris Agreement but need to strengthen plans to cut emissions in the buildings and vehicle sector.
