JAKARTA MTN South Africa launched a new 5G smartphone called MTN Icon 5G which is priced at 2,499 rand (around Rp. 2.5 million). This launch is part of MTN's commitment to expand internet mobile access and accelerate customer transition from 2G and 3G networks to 4G and 5G.

According to GSMA, mobile internet penetration has indeed reduced the digital divide in South Africa, but affordability issues are still a major barrier.

MTN Icon 5G, produced by Chinese mobile phone maker ZTE Corp, is also available with a 36-month contract package for 219 rands per month. The device is presented as a solution for customers who want to enjoy higher data speeds, lower latency, and better user experience with 5G technology.

"This move shows our efforts to ensure all South Africans have access to mobile communications that are fast, reliable, and affordable, regardless of their economic background," said Thando Gabela, General Manager for devices at MTN South Africa.

In another development, MTN South Africa also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with China Telecom and Huawei for strategic collaboration in 5G, cloud, AI, and business solutions. This collaboration aims to encourage the development of digital infrastructure in Africa.

"This collaboration combines China Telecom's global expertise in network solutions, MTN regional coverage, and Huawei advanced technology, creating a strong alliance for digital development on this continent," said Kai Chen, China's Executive Vice President Telecom Global.

This collaboration will also open up new opportunities, including the development of Internet of Things (IoT) technology and application in sectors such as smart mining and other industrial applications.

"With network service improvements, MTN's business customers will have access to new possibilities in the field of smart mining and industrial applications," said Tumi Sekhukhune-Chamayou, Chief Enterprise Business Officer of MTN South Africa.
