JAKARTA - A group of online motorcycle taxi drivers (ojol) who are members of the Mobile Rapid Response Unit (URC) will hold a demonstration in the Horse Statue area, Central Jakarta, on Thursday, July 17.
General of the UrC Mobile Field Achhsanul Solihin revealed that his party voiced three demands to fight legal uncertainty and a unilateral narrative that had been considered detrimental to ojol drivers.
"We are not workers, we are independent partners. We reject regulations that force drivers to enter the subordinating work system. We have been silent enough, now we are talking," said Achsanul in his statement, Wednesday, July 16.
Achsanul said that his party also opposed the fate of the ojol group being infiltrated by the political agenda of certain parties.
"Don't use the driver's name for political interests, regulations, or campaigns for certain groups. The original driver's voice should come from the streets, not from the meeting room," he said.
One of the demands that will be put forward in tomorrow's demonstration is to sue President Prabowo Subianto to issue a government regulation in lieu of the law as a legal umbrella that clarifies the legal status between the driver and the applicator.
This is necessary so that ojol does not continue to be a victim of overlapping policies between institutions.
"Today we have no certainty. We don't have a legal umbrella, there is no direction. Each agency talks differently, while on the road we still bear all the risks. It has been too long since the ojol has been left without a firm legal umbrella. Therefore, we urge the President of the Republic of Indonesia to intervene directly. Issue a special Perppu for online motorcycle taxis," he explained.

In addition, the ojol group also requires the government to continue to make drivers independent partners and not employees with binding working hours and targets.
"We have the right to regulate working hours, choose orders, and determine the rhythm of our own lives. When the system wants to place us as workers, what will be lost is our independence as drivers. Being workers means we will be burdened with unilateral rules, binding targets, and potentially losing flexibility which is the main value of this work," explained Achsanul.
In addition, Achsanul also emphasized that his party rejected the change in the commission discount scheme to 10 percent.
They admitted that they did not mind the 20 percent discount that had been running so far, as long as it was not used as a framing tool by interested parties.
"Currently, a 20 percent discount on driver's income has been going on for years. We don't mind this scheme. We understand that applicators have to stay afloat and we also have to survive, we are partners who can't live without each other."
