Sumatran Tiger Enters The Trap Cage Of BKSDA In Pelalawan Riau

PEKANBARU - A Sumatran tiger entered the trap cage of the Riau Conservation and Natural Resources Center for Forest Utilization Business Licensing (PBPH) in Pelalawan after the animal was reported to have caused one victim to die.

"Two days after the incident on Thursday (13/3), on Sunday, March 16, 2024, a Sumatran tiger was found in a trap cage (Boxtrap) installed on the location," said Head of the Riau BKSDA, Genman Hasibuan, as reported by ANTARA, Tuesday, March 18.

Furthermore, he said the team evacuated to the workers' "camp" by using a water vehicle. Then proceed to evacuate to the habituation cage for treatment before releasing to nature in the future.

Genman said that initially the Riau BKSDA received a report from the PBPH holding company regarding the conflict between Sumatran tigers (Panthera Tigris Sumatrae) which caused one person to die on Thursday (13/3).

The male victim is 50 years old who is a maintenance worker or "weeking". The victim suffered cuts in the back of the head and neck as well as on the upper right thigh.

The Riau BKSDA then coordinated with the company to take countermeasures. On Friday (14/3) the Riau KSDA Center deployed the Animal Rescue Unit (UPS) to conduct studies and countermeasures and install cages and camera traps.

A trap cage was installed with two units at the TKP location and a location near the worker camp which is a tiger track based on the traces found. In addition, his party conducted socialization to workers and carried out joint patrols as an effort to overcome it.

"As a precautionary measure, for some time to come, the Riau BBKSDA will increase patrols in conflict-prone areas, educate the public on how to act when meeting Sumatran tiger animals, and encourage the implementation of an early warning system around areas bordering wildlife habitats," he said.
