JAKARTA - A total of 17 students died in a fire in the state of Zamfara, northern Nigeria.

Students at Islamic schools in the city of Kauran Namoda in Zamfara State died in the fire. While about 12 others were taken to hospital with severe burns.

Police spokesman Yazid Abubakar said investigations were underway to determine the cause of the fire.

Hussaini Adamu, who lost her two children to the fire, said the fire started from a nearby house and spread to the Islamic school on Tuesday, February 4.
