JAKARTA - Ukrainian officials suspect Russia used a new type of guided bomb when launching airstrikes against Kharkiv City in the northeast.

Officials said that apart from killing at least one person, the attack left 19 people injured, including four children, one of whom was a three-month-old baby. The attack also caused power outages in Kharkiv.

Kharkiv and its surrounding areas are often attacked with missiles and drones for more than two years of war. However, the use of large-caliber guided bombs is unusual in the city.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack as "Russian terror".

"Russia's terror against the city is becoming increasingly heinous," President Zelensky of X said, urging Ukrainian allies to supply more air defenses and fighter jets.

"There is no rational explanation as to why Patriots, which are abundant around the world, still have not covered Kharkiv's skies and other cities and communities attacked by Russian terrorists," he said.

Meanwhile, Kharkiv Regional Police Chief Volodymyr Tymoshko said Moscow may be using a new type of guided bomb that he describes as a D-30 UMPB.

"This is something between the guided air bombs they (Russia) used recently, and a missile. It can be said this is a flying bomb," Tymoshko said at the site of the attack.

Meanwhile, local governor By Synehubov also assessed Moscow may have used a new type of bomb, saying: "It appears Russia decided to test their modified bomb on the occupants of the house."

Two residential buildings and a partially destroyed medical institution, with a total of 14 buildings, including educational facilities, were damaged, Synehubov said via Telegram.

The Mayor of Kharkiv Ihor Terekhov wrote on Telegram, reporting another attack after midnight in a city district that destroyed a restaurant and broke a window in an adjacent building. There was no injury.

Meanwhile, prosecutors in Kharkiv's area reported a 12-year-old boy was killed when Russian troops opened fire on the city of Borova, southeast of Kharkiv.

Police closed the affected five-story residential building, the windows were broken and the balconys were badly damaged.

"Some people were unlucky. One person died, the other suffered shrapnel injuries," said Kateryna Velnychuk, who was inside the building when the bomb hit.

Russia did not immediately comment on the Ukrainian authorities' statements. They denied targeting civilians, although war had killed thousands of people, forcing millions of people to flee and destroy major cities.
