Speaking As One Of The Keynote Speakers At The International Forum, Anies Highlights City Problems After The Pandemic

JAKARTA - DKI Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan became one of the speakers at the Climate Heroes international forum by the Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia (FPCI) and the United States Embassy in Jakarta.

In an online forum on Thursday, September 30, Anies said that Jakarta will host Urban20 in 2022 which will discuss potential issues in the era after the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Cities have a dynamic rhythm of life, always changing and developing. In the inauguration of Jakarta as the next host of Urban20 (U20), I highlight 6 post-pandemic city phenomena that must be watched out for," said Anies.

He explained these 6 phenomena, including productive (affordable) housing, the future of the property industry, sustainable mobility and inclusive accessibility to mobility, job scarcity and the future of work, limited social interaction, and concern for the increasing number of orphans due to the death of their parents due to COVID-19.

"We have to pay attention to this and we try to find a solution," said Anies.

In the forum, Anies also explained the phenomenon of large urbanization which makes most of the population live in cities.

“Most of the world's population lives in cities. In this sense, much of life depends on the city. It is projected that at least 60.4 percent of the world's population will live in cities in 2030 and 68 percent in 2050 and later the role of cities is important for our civilization," he said.

Furthermore, Anies also highlighted the climate change of the city which has a big impact on aspects of the life of the population in it. For this reason, cities are responsible for reducing carbon emissions that are the cause of climate change in the world, so that the earth can later be livable for the next generation.

“The role of urban systems and city leaders is critical, especially when cities are challenged by major challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change. Therefore, the international community also pays significant attention to cities," said Anies.

“In global agreements, such as the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, city governments are recognized as important allies in driving a greener, resilient and sustainable future. Cities are also responsible for reducing global carbon emissions by taking action at the local level.” he continued.
