JAKARTA - Qatar's foreign minister held talks with the Afghan prime minister last Sunday, marking the highest-level foreign official visit since the Taliban took control of Kabul.
Quoting Reuters Monday, September 13, Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani called on Afghanistan's new rulers to involve all parties in the country in national reconciliation, when he met with Prime Minister Mullah Muhammad Hasan Akhund, Qatar's Foreign Ministry said.
Qatar is considered one of the countries with the most influence over the Taliban, playing a key role in the massive US-led airlift through Kabul airport throughout late August.
In addition, Qatar's capital, Doha, also hosts the political office of the Taliban, witnessing US negotiations that led to a massive troop withdrawal from the country.
Sheikh Mohammed and Prime Minister Akhund also discussed joint efforts to fight terrorist organizations that threaten Afghanistan's stability, ways to promote peace in the country, and safe travel for people, according to the Qatari ministry.
"The meeting focused on bilateral relations, humanitarian aid, economic development, and interaction with the world", said one of the Taliban's spokesmen Mohammad Naeem on Twitter.
