Allegedly Involved In Murder Of Fellow Wrestler, Indian Olympic Medalist Detained

JAKARTA - Two-time Olympic medalist from India, Sushil Kumar, has been arrested by police on charges of being linked to the murder of a fellow Indian wrestler.

New Delhi police said the arrest of the Wrestling athlete was made on Sunday, May 23. In addition to Kumar, two other people allegedly involved in the case also faced court, without detailing the charges.

"The police have the right to detain and examine Kumar for the next six days", as reported by CCN from CNN-News18.

Earlier, New Delhi Police issued a surveillance notice against Kumar, after he was involved in a brawl outside New Delhi's Chhatrasal Stadium on May 4.

As a result of the fight, three people were treated at a local hospital, one of whom was a former Indian junior national champion. Unfortunately, this former junior national champion died from his injuries.

Kumar fled Delhi after news of the wrestler's death, according to CNN-News18, citing a police spokesman. Several teams were deployed to search for him. Police are also offering cash rewards for information leading to wrestler's arrests.

After his arrest, Kumar denied any wrongdoing in an anticipatory bail application he sent to a Delhi court last week.

Meanwhile, Kumar's legal team in his defense argument said Kumar contributed to the country in sports. Kumar's team of lawyers also accused investigators of fabricating the story, according to defense documents reviewed by CNN.

However, the court rejected the rebuttal and the claims mentioned, taking into account the serious nature of the charges levied against Kumar.

Sushil Kumar has been the pride and hope for the future of Wrestling in India. This is inseparable from his success in winning a silver medal at the 2012 Olympics and a bronze medal in the 2008 Olympics.
