List Of Foods Should Not Be Consumed On An Empty Stomach
JAKARTA - When you feel very hungry, there is a tendency to overeat without thinking about the side effects on the stomach. Eating too little or skipping meals can cause us to overeat.
Many also end up consuming high-calorie foods or snacks which then cause vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, and in some cases food poisoning. This is because your gastrointestinal (GI) tract can become more sensitive to certain types of food if it is empty for too long.
The following is a list of foods that should not be consumed when the stomach is very hungry, reported Boldsky, Sunday, March 28.
1. Avocado
Loaded with various nutrients, avocado helps lower cholesterol levels, regulates blood sugar, protects the eyes, increases fertility, improves cognitive function, improves digestive health, and can help prevent osteoarthritis.
But eating avocado on an empty stomach, especially when you've never eaten it before, is not good. The fat content in avocados is digested very slowly and can trigger reflux in some people.
2. Raw vegetables
Vegetables are naturally beneficial for your overall health. Even so, raw vegetables on an empty stomach are something to avoid. They can make you feel too full and can even cause a drop in blood sugar later in life. Fibrous vegetables can be difficult to digest and can cause gas and bloating.
3. Fruits (large portion)
While eating one banana or apple may be fine on an empty stomach, eating a large portion of fruit will cause your blood glucose to spike and then leave you feeling tired and hungry again in 30-60 minutes. The acidity in fruits can also cause acid reflux.
4. Energy bar
Energy bars can provide energy but not when you eat them on an empty stomach. Energy bars can get heavy on an empty stomach, leading to gas and discomfort as your body tries to digest food.
5. Protein shakes
Most protein shakes contain whey which when consumed on an empty stomach can cause side effects such as bloating, cramps, and diarrhea.
6. Red meat
Red meat is rich in protein, meaning it takes a lot of time for our bodies to digest it. Eating red meat on an empty stomach will cause your body to overwork (break down protein), resulting in stomach pressure, and feelings of excessive fullness.
7. Coffee
Drinking coffee on an empty stomach in the morning can cause your body to release hydrochloric acid into the digestive system, increasing acidity and resulting in digestive problems.
8. Chips
Whether it's roasted or fried, the salt in chips is bad for digestion, especially if the stomach is empty for a long time.
9. Chewing gum
There is a common misconception that chewing gum can make you feel full or help you take your mind off food. Chewing gum on an empty stomach will cause the production of gastric juices and lead to stomachache and nausea.
