Foreign Minister Wang Yi: China Continues Its Commitment To Restoring Peace And Stability In Myanmar

JAKARTA - Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Friday stressed that China would support the transition to democracy in Myanmar, supporting regional plans to find a way out of the ongoing crisis in the Southeast Asian country, as he made a visit to Thailand.

This was conveyed by Foreign Minister Wang at a press conference, after previously visiting Myanmar and meeting with military junta leader Senior General Min Aung Hlaing this week.

"Childs continue their commitment to restore peace and stability in Myanmar," he said.

The Bamboo Curtain country has promised technical support and assistance for censuses, followed by general elections currently planned to be held next year, the military junta-run media said on Thursday.

Myanmar itself has been in turmoil since February 2021, when the military toppled the elected civilian government in a coup, which abruptly ended the country's tentative move to become a full democracy.

Present in Thailand to attend a regional meeting, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said China also supports a peace plan approved by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), known as a five-point consensus to resolve the crisis in Myanmar.
