KPK Files An Appeal Asking SYL To Pay Replacement Money Of IDR 44.2 Billion And 30 Thousand US Dollars

JAKARTA - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) prosecutor handed over a memorandum of appeal against the decision of former Minister of Agriculture (Mentan) Syahrul Yasin Limpo. This legal effort was made so that this former official would pay the replacement money.

"We remain confident that the charge of replacement money enjoyed by the defendant Syahrul Yasin Limpo is still worth Rp44.2 billion and 30 thousand US dollars is very worthy of being handed down, including serving a 12-year body sentence as demanded by the prosecutor team," said KPK Prosecutor Muhammad Hadi in a written statement, Tuesday, August 6.

This additional penalty charge, continued Hadi, is also feasible because of Syahrul's attitude during the trial. "The defendant was not honest and convoluted and was not gentle by throwing the mistake he made to his subordinates," he said.

Thus, the prosecutor hopes that the high court can impose additional penalties in the form of replacement money. It is also necessary to understand that the purpose of punishment as an ultimum remidium is to create a deterrent effect for the perpetrators and it is hoped that it will be able to have an effect so that others do not commit criminal acts," said Hadi.

"Therefore, we ask and hope that the Panel of Judges at the DKI Jakarta High Court will decide objectively by reading and analyzing legal facts as outlined by the team of prosecutors in their indictment," he continued.

As previously reported, former Agriculture Minister Syahrul Yasin Limpo was sentenced to 10 years by the Jakarta Corruption Court. He was proven to have blackmailed his men.

In addition, he also had to pay compensation of Rp. 14.1 billion and US$ 30 thousand. Payments must be made within one month of a final legal decision.
