IPhone Sales In China Drop 30% In The First Week Of 2024, Huawei Is More Steady

JAKARTA - Apple's sales of the iPhone in China decreased by 30% in the first week of 2024. This was revealed by analyst Jefferies in a note. This report adds to the signs of increased competition pressure from domestic competitors such as Huawei against the US tech giant.

Apple's decline in sales became the main catalyst for the decline in the total number of smartphone shipments in China in the first week, according to brokerage records published on Sunday, January 7. Other Android brands and Huawei managed to achieve relatively stable growth year after year during this period, the note said.

This decline occurred despite aggressive discounts for several iPhone models through major online trading platforms in China, according to the research records. For example, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max experienced 16% price cuts on the e-commerce platform Pinduoduo in the first week of 2024.

According to Jefferies, this 30% decline is an acceleration of the year after year decline of 3% experienced by the United States company throughout 2023 in its third-largest market. They added that the broker got this information from tracking their own market. In particular, a 3% decrease in 2023 is equivalent to a 0.4% decline in Apple's market share.

Jefferies analysts say Apple's decline was largely due to competition pressure from Chinese competitors, especially Huawei, which launched the Mate 60 series in August last year. Apple and Huawei have not responded to requests for comment.

A wide set of Mate 60 phones is considered a sign of Huawei's return to the high-end smartphone market after several years of US sanctions that previously hampered its progress.

For the last quarter of 2023, Huawei's market share in China's smartphone market increased by about 6%, according to the record.

According to Jefferies analysts, Apple is likely to face greater competition pressure than domestic competitors throughout 2024. They predict Apple's shipping volume will continue to decline in double digits by 2024, while Huawei is expected to continue to gain market share.

In particular, they estimate that Huawei will send around 64 million smartphones worldwide by 2024. This number is significantly increasing from the estimated less than 35 million shipped by 2023.
