Jokowi Still Studying 150 Recommendations For The Acceleration Of Legal Reform Formation Mahfud MD

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) is still studying the recommendations produced by the Legal Reform Acceleration Team formed by Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD.

The Legal Reform Acceleration Team submitted a document containing 150 recommendations to President Jokowi at the Bogor Palace, West Java (West Java) on Thursday, September 14.

"(The recommendation) will be studied by the President to determine future policy steps and there is a request from the President directly delivered in yesterday's meeting. The President asked this team to draw up which stages will be carried out in the near future or even later in the long term. It has been conveyed, including the preparation of the roadmap and it was immediately responded to by the President," said Head of the Legal Reform Acceleration Team Sugeng Purnomo in response to reporters' questions during a press conference at the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Office, Jakarta, Friday, September 15, confiscated by Antara.

In a meeting with the Legal Reform Acceleration Team, Sugeng said that President Jokowi promised that the recommendations would be taken into consideration for future improvements and policies.

"Mr. President said he would study. So, it means that it still takes time, of course, because it was only yesterday that the team met him and conveyed his work," said Sugeng Purnomo, who currently serves as Deputy III for Law and Human Rights at the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs.

Apart from that, Sugeng said that President Jokowi also asked the Legal Reform Acceleration Team to prepare any recommendations that could be followed up in a short time.

"This recommendation is quite a lot. The President actually asked the team to make one stage which will be carried out in a faster time, but the President also said that he would study, and this could certainly be understood because he had just received the team's arrival and submitted the results of his work," said Sugeng.

On the same occasion, he emphasized that after submitting the recommendation documents, it did not mean that the work of the Legal Reform Acceleration Team ended because there were still further tasks from President Jokowi that had to be completed.

The working period of the Legal Reform Acceleration Team as stipulated in the decision letter for its formation will be completed by the end of 2023.

"In addition, we will see from several recommendations that we will map out later, which priority we will include in the next priority. It is hoped that this team will also fully oversee whether these recommendations are part of future improvements," said Sugeng Purnomo.

Mahfud MD formed a Team for the Acceleration of Legal Reform through Decree Number 63 of 2023 which was set in Jakarta on May 23, 2023.

The team, which consists of a number of experts and experts, held its inaugural meeting on June 9, 2023 and within three months finished compiling 150 recommendations divided into four major themes, namely reform of the legislation sector, reform of judicial institutions and law enforcement, legal reform of the agrarian sector and natural resources, as well as prevention and eradication of corruption.
