Sutiyoso Re-elected As Governor Of DKI Jakarta In Today's Memory, September 12, 2002
JAKARTA Memories of today, 21 years ago, 12 September 2002, Sutiyoso was re-elected as Governor of DKI Jakarta for the 2002-2007 term of service. The man who is familiarly called Bang Yos won the election of the Governor of DKI by members of the council which took place at the DPRD Building, Kebon Sirih, Central Jakarta.
Previously, controversy often accompanied Sutiyoso's steps as Jakarta's number one person. He is considered to have had past sins in the 1996 July 27 Riots (Kudatuli). However, his leadership in Jakarta was fully supported by many parties.
The attack on the headquarters of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) known as Kudatuli 1996 is still warm in the memory of the whole of Indonesia. The investigation has not been perpetuated. The central figures in Kudatuli are still moving freely.
Some have become state officials. Sutiyoso, one of them. Sutiyoso is considered to have a central role in Kudatuli for serving as Pangdam Jakarta. He is considered responsible for the Kudatuli incident. Instead of being tried, he was appointed governor of DKI Jakarta in 1997.
Since then Sutiyoso's leadership has often been associated with past sins. However, Sutiyoso just considered the wind all the comments were tilted. He continued to try to lead Jakarta well. Even that position made him learn many things. He tries to adapt to occupying civilian positions.
He tried to study all kinds of problems in Jakarta. A series of achievements have also been achieved. Especially when the 1998 riots ended with the resignation of President Suharto. Bang Yos can keep the riots from spreading.
He was able to provide a sense of security to many ambassadors in Jakarta. However, that does not mean that Bang Yos' leadership is without problems. Many of his calculations in beautifying Jakarta missed. He failed to anticipate the Jakarta floods.
The biggest problem from his leadership is that he often gives the blessing of entrepreneurs to turn Green Open Space (RTH) into a business area. Another failure is that Bang Yos is unable to reduce corruption habits within the government.
Due to flooding, Sutiyoso has drawn a class action lawsuit from residents. To this day, the trial of the case is still ongoing at the Central Jakarta District Court. And the flood was only one of the governor's red figures who had ruled under these four presidents: Suharto, Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur), Habibie, and Megawati. Under Sutiyoso's administration, Jakarta's face is not only getting scary."
The city's assets are also shrinking. Crime is rampant. Bombs exploded everywhere. The practice of corruption, collusion, and nepotism within the DKI Regional Government is getting worse. Traffic congestion is happening. Sutiyoso is also responsible for a number of green lane areas and rain catchment areas that have turned into business areas that invite flooding," wrote Tempo Magazine report entitled Ke Jakarta, Sutiyoso Kembali (2002).
The narrative of Sutiyoso's failure to build Jakarta everywhere. Sutiyoso is considered unfit to lead Jakarta. Moreover, for two terms. All these assumptions then disappeared. The political world is actually running dynamically. Officials actually support Sutiyoso a lot.
President Megawati, who incidentally lost her cadres in the Kudatuli incident, actually supported Sutiyoso's candidacy to return as Governor of DKI Jakarta with a service period of 2002-2007. The voices of rejection did not have any influence.
