Heartbreaking, Heroic Story Of Disabled Athlete Rexus Ohee Passes Away For Medal To Indonesia At The 2022 ASEAN Para Games
JAKARTA - The implementation of the ASEAN Para Games XI 2022 has long ended. Indonesian athletes have succeeded in making the name of the nation proud by becoming the overall champion.
However, there is a heroic story that has not been revealed. The Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora) Zainudin Amali told this when giving bonuses to the 2022 ASEAN Para Games athletes at the State Palace, Monday, November 28.
The Menpora said that one of the athletes died after donating medals to the Indonesian contingent. He is Rexus Ohee, a Boccia sports athlete from Papua.
The Menpora said that Rexus was actually in a sick condition when he competed in the 2022 ASEAN Para Games. In fact, he had been asked to go to the hospital.
However, the late Rexus refused because he wanted to present a medal for Indonesia.
"After he got the medal, he wanted to go to the hospital, but it was too late because his illness was too chronic. Finally Rexus Ohee, the Indonesian contingent athlete from Papua died, but after he got the medal for the Indonesian contingent," said the Menpora, as reported by the official website of the Ministry.
The heroic story of the late Rexus is a consideration for the government to provide equal awards to athletes with disabilities. Rexus' struggle is also expected to be a motivation for other Indonesian athletes in fighting for the Red and White flag.
"The story of Rexus Ohee is a heroic story that needs to be an example for all parties, regarding the struggle of a child of the nation for the Red and White and Greater Indonesia," concluded the Menpora.
