Chelsea Spend 186 Million Euros To Strengthen Defense
JAKARTA - The departures of free agent Antonio Rudiger to Real Madrid and Andreas Christensen to Barcelona left a gaping hole in Chelsea's defense.
However, the Blues managed to stem the loss by renewing the contracts of Thiago Silva and Cesar Azpilicueta. They also spent money to bring in new defenders.
Todd Boehly, Roman Abramovich's successor as team owner, has picked up where his predecessor left him in terms of spending.
The Blues were the team that spent the most money in the summer transfer window, reaching 269.09 million euros.
What is really striking is that almost all of the spending goes towards strengthening the team's defenses.
Chelsea has spent a total of 186 million euros on defenders; Wesley Fofana (82.5 million euros), Marc Cucurella (65.3 million euros), and Kalidou Koulibaly (38 million euros).
That value increased to 195 million euros when the investment in goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina was included.
