Zoom App On Chromebooks Will Be Shutting Down In August

JAKARTA - Zoom has become a video calling application or online meeting that we often use during the COVID-19 pandemic in recent years.

Unfortunately, Zoom will stop operating on Chromebooks starting in August. The news was obtained from a notification found by 9to5google.

"This app will no longer be officially supported after August 2022. Please use the new Zoom for Chrome PWA to join meetings on ChromeOS." wrote the notice, quoted Monday, May 20.

Thus, chromebook users no longer use the Zoom application on their laptops. But instead, you can use the Zoom Progressive Web App (PWA). This means that users using Zoom on ChromeOS must access it via the web.

Zoom for Chrome PWA is a more complete version of the original app and one that acts more like what Zoom offers on Windows and macOS.

Reasons for Shutting Down the Zoom App

The Zoom app is said to be a "traditional" Chrome app that's too old and irrelevant anymore.

In addition, Zoom on chromebooks has been around since 2021, by providing simple access to meetings and without additional features, that's also what causes Zoom to be turned off because it still uses old technology.

On the other hand, Google announced in August 2020 that it would be removing the Chrome app on all platforms. For Windows, Mac, and Linux, support ends in June 2021.

Starting June 2022, Google is also removing the Chrome app on Chrome OS. New apps are no longer accepted and all existing apps will no longer be listed in the Chrome Web Store. Given this, it's only natural that Zoom ended up shutting down the app.
