The General Election Commission of West Java Province revealed that there was a request to connect surveillance cameras (closedcircittelevision/CCTV) at the election organizing agency, both KPU and Bawaslu, with the police headquarters.

West Java KPU chairman Ummi Wahyuni said his agency considers the request as a form of election security based on his understanding that connected CCTV is outside the facility.

"There is (a request for collection), but we consider this to be something that is done as a form of security only. They (connections) do not go inside, only outside," Ummi said as quoted by ANTARA, Monday, November 20.

However, Ummi said that her party had not received the official letter of request from the police, even though the information she had heard.

"So far I have not received the official letter. The information is there, but it is not technically what it is like," said Ummi.

Previously, it was widely reported that there was a request from the National Police via telegram so that CCTV installed by the KPU and Bawaslu in the East Java region could be accessed by the local police.

KPU chairman Hasyim Asy'ari said the request was not negative, in order to maintain better security. Hasyim also knew about the request as chairman at the national level.

"The installation of CCTV and CCTV access by the police is to the knowledge of the leadership of the Central KPU and the leadership of the National Police. This is the embodiment and implementation of the cooperation between the KPU and the Police as the MoU which was signed by the KPU Chairman and the National Police Chief on December 29, 2022," he said, Friday (10/11).

Hasyim explained that in the Election Law, the mandate for security is the authority of the police. Then, police security against the KPU includes personnel, assets and logistics (production, distribution and warehousing).

"Based on this, it is natural that the police installed CCTV or CCTV access at the KPU office and the election logistics warehouse," said Hasyim.

Based on this belief, Hasyim emphasized that public reports regarding the request of the National Police to install CCTV connected to the Polres and KPU offices in East Java were not odd findings.

He ensured that there was nothing to worry about by the public because it was solely to protect against criminal acts.

"So, it is natural, there is nothing to worry about and not strange facts," said Hasyim.
